Essay due on the 8th!

We are supposed to write an essay about a motif or theme from Native Sun or A Rasin in the Sun. If we post some of the ideas, themes or motifs here, I think we can all benefit from having the information (Except our own thoughts and conclusions of course) infront of us.

  1. I'm glad Mr. Bruno cancelled this essay, but we can still talk about the motifs or themes? I thought the common theme in both A Raisin in the Sun and Native Son was the theme of opression against strong willed people and how it could affect them. The family in A Raisin in the Sun came out on top and didn't let the oppression sink in and hurt them. Bigger, on the other hand, let the opression of the white people get to him which led him to killing two women and being sentenced to death.

  2. Yeh, I had a bad case of Junioritis. Cancelling the essay was a brilliant idea. Besides, having group discussions on the contrasting Motiffs accomplished alot more than doing an essay would. I agree with TJ in that in both stories, the main protagonist(s) was opressed by racist honkeys and was forced to react to the opression in their own self satisfying way. A large difference between Bigger and the family in Raisin in the Sun was the lack of moral support given to Bigger. This, in my opinion, let him to do grave atrocious things.
