At first, the prospect of joining AP English was a little intimidating. I had always performed well in prior English classes; however, friends instructed me to spare the needless Long hours, daunting criticism, and intense scrutiny that would accompany me and my work, should I join the class. I knew the weighted grade might help my GPA, so, despite my growing concerns and the my friends' advice, I decided to join the class. My fears of failing the class were realized before School even started. Unfortunately, I had misconceived that the pre-requisite summer assignments were due on the first day of school, when in reality, their deadlines were strewn about periodically over the summer. Upon discovering my mishap, I immediately decided to drop the class. On the first day of school, I went to talk to the councelling office during lunch and awaited the unscheduled appointment with Mrs. Bridges, my former councellor. Now, I've always had bad luck, it was something I'd grown accustomed to over the years with resigned acceptance; However, I was mortified to hear that I had missed the drop-out deadline by just one day. Despite the unfortunate inception of the school year and the demanding assignments accompanying Mr. Reanold's AP English 11 class at BPHS, I was able to grasp a decent amount of the material and float by with a C+. The second grading period wasn't much better. I'd accumulated a decent understanding of the course; however, the class was so friggin boring. That all changed when I moved to NSHS for my second semester and joined Mr. Bruno's class. Although the transition from Reanold's style of teaching to Bruno's and having a large amount of familiar classmates to a small, seemingly strange group of classmates was a slow one, I was able to fit in pretty nicely, better grasp and enjoy class discussions, even on books I had never read, as well as gain a greater appreciation for literature and it's many technicalities. Our class discussions invoked deep and appreciation for different styles and literary devices. With a new perspective on literature, assignments that I would have previously conceived as daunting or bland were now eye opening and even enjoyable.
My greatest misconception of all was not about due dates, it was my former belief that AP classes could not yield entertainment, deep understanding, and a B+.
