While writing the synthesis essay for The Great Gatsby, I was having difficultly combining the different aspects of the themes into one coherent thought. I wanted to discuss the hollowness of the upper class, and I had difficultly choosing two other pieces that showed a similar theme that could be compared and contrasted. I ended up choosing Bop, and A Rose for Emily. I think that they accompanied the theme of Gatsby very well. Over all I had difficulties writing the essay but managed to complete it.
What did everyone else think about the synthesis essay and the broad constraints placed on it? (I.e. you were not given the sources you had to combine you had to determine which to use on your own.)

I felt that is was very hard to incorperate the essays into my syntethesis essay. I knew that "Bop" worked well with my theme of excess living causes damage and pain towards others (oppresion), but I had difficulty trying to include Catch-22 or A Farewell to Arms. I finally twisted my thinking to try and incorperate A Farewell to Arms. I felt like I did a terrible job writing because I couldn't fully explain the theme because I had to focus on trying to make sure that the writings I used were right.
ReplyDeleteI thought that, because we had no specific question and we could go any which way, the synthesis essay was hard to compose. It seemed too vague for me and I really need to be told exactly what to do. I don't know about everyone else, but I have trouble when I don't know what exactly the teacher is wanting and I was really confused by the synthesis essay composure, as you could tell from Mr. Bruno dying my paper red.
ReplyDeleteHey, by the way, does anyone know when our revised synthesis essay is due?
ReplyDeleteHe only checked mine (murdered it) and some of Jenna's, so when would that make it due since it can't be due tomorrow if the rest of you didn't get yours back?
Mr. Bruno, if you're reading this, would they be due monday so everyone can see their corrections and redo it or when would they be due?
First off - Sorry T.J., I don't know when the revision is due. I'm hoping he'll give us more time since we did not get them back.
ReplyDeleteAnd secondly - For me, it wasn't all that hard to pick the novel and Norton piece that my theme was related to. At first, yes, I was having a bit of trouble, but after running the theme over and over in my mind, and looking through the Norton samples, it just sort of clicked. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe my synthesis essay is just bad, but for me it was fairly easy.
I agree with Daniel, I thought it was somewhat easy to incorporate them into my essay. Some of that reason might be because I forgot the other novel. Hopefully it wont be too difficult once I write that part, if it is I'll be sure to post again.
