Based on Catch-22, I think that the United States would be considered that of Tom. The United States of Huck is more understanding to people. The United States of Tom isn't as understanding and considerate, which is just like the people in charge that keep raising the missions, who don't care what happens to these people there. So in order for the US to be the United States of Huck in Catch-22, they would need to be a lot more generous and somewhat caring to the people/mission people.
In Catch-22 I would say that the US is similar to Tom then Huck because the country is at war, but still the reasons behind thier fighting our centerred around themselves, when a Huck country would be more helpful and generous about thier involvement. Our intentions were purely self- centered, even though we were still risking lives, they were more in vain then for the cause and help of the greater good.
I agree with TJ that the COL, is an example for out Tom personality, instead of living up to his word that he gave the soldiers, he would extend it, and then his word was useless, he lost meaning to it.
Choosing between either the States of Tom or Huck is a bit challenging. Our intentions in the war were good - we wanted to destroy the Axis of Evil. However, the United States only entered the war after Pearl Harbor was bombed. That seems like a Tom kind of thing to do. A United States of Huck would not have waited until then. They would have helped out the Allies much sooner. Also, the propaganda and the attitude towards the war was very much the way Tom thought. Sort of fictional, making the United States seem all glorious. So, I'd have to say the United States of WWII is the United States of Tom.
Would the United States of Huck, based on our discussion of the two "states" in class, even bother going to war? Would Tom know where to draw the line?
The United States in Catch 22 is more of a United States of Tom than Huck, because the lower ranking troops portrayed in the novel see only their current situation, and not the overall situation that would represent a United States of Huck. Their viewpoint shows the United States as clumsy, with the bureaucratic pointlessness representing Tom's ridiculous ideas and rules he creates. Had the novel somehow focused on the novel picture and showed the United States in its whole war effort and standing up for itself, then the United States would be one of Huck.
I believe the United States in Catch-22 is similar to the United States of Tom. I believe this because of Tom's need for self-preservance which would out-weigh the needs of others. If it were a Huck country it would have lended help to the allies long before Pearl Harbor. I also believe that the United States complicated the commands so that no officer could escape orders without real cause. The United States of Tom seemed willing to wait until the last minute to come to the rescue in order to appear like the heros that saved the allies. Had it not been for Pearl Harbor I believe that the United States would have waited to the war was almost completely lost before interceeding and saveing the day.
