Symbolism in The Grapes of Wrath

Read over the two articles we will be discussing in class on Friday, 11/21.

What are some of your initial reactions to reading them?

Is reading academic writing different than reading writing for fun?

Post any thoughts here about the two pieces.

Happy Thinking,

Mr. B

  1. I think that academic writing is more difficult to us because it involves interpretation and understanding what the passage is trying to say. Regular reading writing for fun is easier due to the less thought needed to understand what's going on and we actually want to do it. When one is forced to do something, it isn't as pleasurable, especially if it comes off as more difficult due to the intelligence put into it.

  2. Reading academic writing is much more difficult because the theroies and meanings are deeper and though out. In comparison reading novels and reading for fun the plot drags the meanings on in an entertaining way. The articles were more developed in a shorter amount of time, and that makes it harder to comprehend in a shorter amount of time.

  3. Reading academic writing is very different than reading for fun. I read for fun because i like to read about wizards in Harry Potter, and wish i could use magic. I read academically because there is a specific purpose to what I read. I'm not saying I don't enjoy academic reading, because I do, but I read them to help satisfy my curiosity.

  4. Academic reading is different from reading for fun. When reading for fun the reader can pick their favorite genre, favorite writer, etc. Academic reading isn't always as fun though. The reader is put under pressure to read something that may not always be enjoyable. I do say not always, because academic reading can be enjoyable. Personally, I found the academic reading we read fun. It was interesting and I didn't have to analyze what they were saying and referring to so much that I disliked the original piece.

  5. Reading academic writing is clearly different from reading writing that is written for fun, simply for the fact that writing that was written for fun keeps focus on the lighter topics of life and the world. Academic writing however, often takes these lighter topics and twists and turns them into heavy disputes that require much thinking. When reading these academic pieces, one must be very alert and understanding of both sides of the dispute before forming an opinion of his or her own. I don't feel as though this is necessarily more difficult than reading something for fun, but that it simply requires one to be more active in his or her reading, and less passive; a requirement that is more important in nearly all aspects of life than most of us think.

  6. There is a plain difference in that of academic writing and of writings for fun. Academic writing usually has a purpose, either to presuade indiviuals, or to state an opinion. The topics that are discussed in academic writing vary from heavy topics or critisim. Novels written for fun, are often on lighter topics. Mokst novels show the personality of the writer and express their opinions in a lighter way. This makes reading academic writing more difficult if you are not in the right mind-set for reading academic writing.
